Background
C&W Trucking is a Bettendorf, IA-based carrier with a fleet of more than 150 trucks, specializing in the transport of steel and machinery. Their President, Bryan Campbell, got his start in the trucking business transporting steel in 2006. In 2015, Bryan partnered with Doug and Amanda Curless to form C&W Trucking. Committed to expanding, C&W Trucking engaged Boon to find technology solutions that could streamline their operations and unlock hidden efficiencies in their business.
Challenges
After a discovery call, C&W and Boon identified several challenges in C&W’s existing business where Boon’s Automated Order Entry product could be additive:
- Time-consuming manual data entry: Operations staff were manually entering order details from rate confirmations into their TMS taking about 2-3 minutes per order. At 50 orders per day, staff were spending about 10 hours per week on data entry.
- Incomplete EDI data: The team had to enter additional information to EDI orders despite significant cost to set it up
- Potential for error: Manually entering orders into the TMS increased the risk of errant data entry.
- Decreased profits: Errant data entry caused downstream problems for C&W impairing their steady-state profitability.
Solution
Boon proposed and implemented our Automated Order Entry product. With Automated Order Entry, Boon extracts the carrier’s data from rate confirmations and ingests it directly into the TMS, eliminating the need for manual intervention. Additionally, Boon extracted order information from BluJay/E2Open and enriched EDI orders automatically. The automation not only reduces the time spent on data entry but also minimizes errors, allowing the team to focus on more strategic tasks.
Results
Boon and C&W ran an assessment to understand how Boon’s Automated Order Entry product was influencing their operations:
- Success Rate: Now, 92% of orders are entered into C&W’s TMS automatically, requiring only a spot check to ensure data accuracy. Only 8% of the remaining orders have exceptions that need to be handled manually.
- Time Savings: With Automated Order Entry, time required to fully execute an order has been reduced from 2-3 minutes to about 30 seconds (a 67% reduction). With 50 orders entered per day, the Operations Team saves about 100 minutes per day or more than 8 hours per week.
- Operational Efficiency: Coincidentally, Boon was able to onboard C&W shortly after a pivotal team member of the operations team had left. Despite operating shorthanded for the past 9 months, C&W Trucking saw such an efficiency gain from Boon’s Automated Order Entry that it decided it no longer needed to hire an additional team member.
Conclusion
Implementing Boon's Automated Order Entry product has been a game-changer for C&W Trucking. The solution has not only saved time and reduced errors but also slowed the pace at which C&W needs to hire additional operations staff. By automating manual tasks, the team at C&W Trucking can now focus on strategic growth and providing exceptional service to their clients.
